Each summer, high temperatures affect millions of people across the United States. The immediate risks of heat—such as heat exhaustion and dehydration—are well known, but prolonged or repeated exposure to heat may also place added stress on the muscles, joints, and bones.
How the Body Responds to Heat
To stay cool in hot conditions, the body shifts resources away from routine functions and toward temperature regulation. Blood flow increases toward the skin to release heat, and more water is used to produce sweat. These responses are essential for cooling the body, but when they happen often—especially without enough fluid replacement—they can cause dehydration and affect the musculoskeletal system.

Joints are especially vulnerable because they rely on synovial fluid, a water-rich fluid that lubricates the space between bones. When the body becomes dehydrated, available fluids are directed toward cooling the body rather than maintaining joint lubrication.
